Burberry was founded in 1856 by the 21 year old Thomas Burberry. Thomas Burberry worked as a draper’s apprentice before opening his own store in cities such as Basingstoke, Hampshire and England. By the 1870’s Thomas Burberry’s business had established itself by primarily focusing on outdoor apparel. Thomas Burberry then went on to invent a durable, water resistant and breathable fabric which was called Gabardine. Thomas Burberry invented this in 1880 and in 1888, Gabardine had been patented.
